Liberty Defense Holdings Ltd. (SCAN:TSX.V; LD2:FSE) detailed in a news release how its proprietary weapons detection product HEXWAVE works and is superior to humans doing the same task.

"HEXWAVE is a weapons detection technology product that is being developed in response to the evolving needs of urban security in public spaces including sporting arenas, schools, malls and places of worship," according to the release. "It is designed to improve threat detection and quicken the response time of security teams while minimizing interruption to the flow of daily life and foot traffic in these places."

The HEXWAVE system employs four technological subsystems: an antenna array and a transreceiver, three-dimensional (3D) radar image creation; artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning; and smart interface functions. They work like this:

The transceiver generates a low power radiofrequency signal that gets sent through the antenna array to illuminate the area being evaluated for threats. The antenna array then receives, in real time, the reflected signals containing the data.

Next, those captured data are converted into three-dimensional (3D) radar images. (Liberty has the exclusive global license for active 3D radar imaging technology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.) An AI and deep learning-enhanced computer sifts through and interprets the data, detecting metallic and nonmetallic weapons and determining what each one is, a knife, firearm, etcetera.

The smart interface allows HEXWAVE to interact with a facility's existing security infrastructure. For instance, it can connect to and send threat alerts and analytics to surveillance and access control devices.

HEXWAVE drastically reduces the incidence of false positives and maintains the privacy of subjects being assessed, as their personal identifying information is only seen by the machine. HEXWAVE can be easily scaled up to meet the needs of any sized facility. Further, because the units are mobile, they can be deployed in a different location rapidly when necessary.
